Cisco and EMC: Two Powerhouses partner

Cisco Systems Inc. and EMC Corp. have partnered to provide customers with an end-to-end storage consolidation system for remote-office data.

The two entities said they plan on combining Cisco's wide area file services (WAFS) technology and EMC's network attached storage (NAS) and develop an integrated system that consolidates branch office data into the data center, allowing company-wide data to be centrally stored, managed, protected and accessed.

The OEM agreement will enable Cisco to sell and support the EMC NS Series/Integrated NAS systems. Cisco said it plans to offer the NAS technology together with the recently introduced Cisco File Engine to provide a system ideally suited for enterprise storage consolidation over wide-area networks. The integrated system will be sold and supported by Cisco directly and through its worldwide partner channel.

The new system will permit IT administrators to take advantage of centralized resources for backup and disaster recovery to achieve better protection of their branch-office data, the companies said. Centralized management also will help to simplify and reduce the cost of data administration for remote offices throughout the enterprise. In addition, customers will benefit from a single point of contact for support and services for the system, according to the companies.
