Elekta highlighted its new Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion, an advanced system for non-invasive radiosurgery for brain disorders, at this week’s Annual American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) meeting in Philadelphia. The system is an expansion of the company’s Gamma Knife product line with a new system that provides a platform for further refinement and expansion of radiosurgical procedures in the brain, cervical spine and head and neck regions. Specifically, the system also provides an increased treatable volume, which is estimated to increase the number of patients that can benefit from Gamma Knife surgery by up to 40 percent, according to Elekta. Additionally, the company expects the system’s automated single push button workflow approach to save three to five working weeks of physician time per year at an average Gamma Knife center.

The company also indicates that the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion can reduce unwanted body dose to patients by as much as 100 times, which is important for treatment of children and women of childbearing age.

Other systems on display at ASTRO included: Elekta Synergy — a reference system for IGRT; Elekta Axesse — a whole body stereotactic system; and MOSAIQ, an image-enabled EMR from IMPAC.
