Toronto center performs early stage fetal ultrasounds

A new service at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto is striving to ensure that women have the option to detect possible fetal problems earlier in their pregnancy.

Sunnybrook said that the Toronto Centre for Early Fetal Ultrasound is the first center of its kind in Canada to perform early stage fetal ultrasound exam. Using GE Healthcare’s Voluson E8 Expert, physicians can detect potential fetal conditions chromosomal disorders, such as Down's syndrome, according to Sunnybrook.

In Canada, the first targeted ultrasound for detection of anomalies is traditionally performed at 18 to 20 weeks. The Toronto center can now perform ultrasound screening six to eight weeks earlier, at 12 to15 weeks, the center said.
