Petten preferred location for Pallas reactor

The Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) of the Netherlands has expressed the preference for the new research reactor Pallas to be built in Petten. The final choice of location will be made in the spring of 2010.

Petten is already equipped with the full nuclear infrastructure that is necessary for operating Pallas and for the further processing of products from the reactor. Relocating this infrastructure to the Dutch province of Zeeland would require significant additional investment, according to NRG.

In addition, the Petten area has many experts and staff available in the field of nuclear technology and their relocation to Zeeland would be complex, NRG said.

The environmental impact assessment report procedure for Pallas requires a final decision about the location to be made in the spring of 2010.
