GE, EU companies seek to cut energy use by ultrasound

GE Healthcare and a group of ten other medical device manufacturers within the European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical and Healthcare IT industry (COCIR), are committing to reducing the average energy consumption of new ultrasound products by 25 percent by 2012.

According to GE, the companies will establish a self-regulatory initiative for the energy efficient design of medical imaging equipment, using the Energy Related Products directive to create a framework for setting resource efficiency standards by product platform.

The government will also put in place enforcement measurements and environmental improvements will also be achieved prior to commercialization of a product through this initiative, said GE.
