EU permits subclavian approach for TAVI

Medtronic has received CE mark for its CoreValve system to be delivered through a new approach, which would allow access through the subclavian artery located beneath the collar bone for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures.

Since 2007, the CoreValve system has been implanted in more than 12,000 people in 34 countries, according to the Minneapolis-based company. The CoreValve system is currently limited to investigational use in the U.S.

Medtronic said it will begin training physicians on the subclavian technique in the coming weeks.
