Social media are the defining communications trend of the third millennium, yet healthcare has been slow to adopt these powerful tools. In this session, Lee Aase, director of Mayo Clinic's Center for Social Media, will describe Mayo's social media journey. He will explain the basic continuity between traditional word-of-mouth and these newer platforms, and how this understanding has enabled Mayo to engage its employees and patients. Finally, he will describe Mayo's work in establishing the Social Media Health Network, which has brought numerous healthcare providers and health-related organizations together to learn from each other and to accelerate adoption of social technologies to promote health, improve healthcare and fight disease.
