Thinking twice about mammography

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month in full swing, it’s become increasingly difficult to overlook the plea of the pink. However, the complexity behind the decision to undergo mammography screening is lost on many, leaving women vulnerable to overdiagnosis and other potential health risks.

Recently, Christie Aschwanden, writer for the Washington Post, explained her decision to avoid mammography in her article, “I’m just saying no to mammography: Why the numbers are in my favor.” Aschwanden joins a growing population of women who are declining to undergo imaging after the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommended that women aged 40-49 make the decision to start mammography individually based on family history and patient values.
