New chairman of the board for Varian

Varian Medical Systems out of Palo Alto, Calif., elected Andrew Eckert, 52, as head of the board of directors, the manufacturer of radiation oncology technology announced Feb. 20.

The new chairman is replacing 74-year-old Richard M. Levy, who has been leading the board since 2002. Eckert has been a member of Varian’s board of directors since 2004 and is currently CEO of CRC Health Corporation. He is also former CEO of SumTotal Systems, ADAC Laboratories and Eclipsys Corporation.

"Under Dick's guidance, the company established itself as the world's leading innovator and supplier of products for treating cancer with radiation oncology,” remarked Eckert in a release. “Furthermore, the company has capitalized on components technology developed under Dick's leadership to advance the science and benefits of X-ray imaging."

Varian’s technology centers on detector technology and systems used in radiotherapy, radiosurgery and brachytherapy. Eckert’s leadership of the board of directors took effect Feb. 20 upon conclusion of the company’s most recent stockholder’s meeting.
