Breast cancer detection improved by pairing mammography with 3D ultrasound

After committing her life's work to improving the process of screening and identifying breast cancer, Maryellen (Lissak) Giger, PhD, has published a new study that found women with dense breast tissue can improve breast cancer detection by 29 percent when combining mammography and a 3D automated breast ultrasound system.

The study took a look at the performance of 17 radiologists and how they detected breast cancer. 185 cases were collected from prior clinical studies for radiologists to review in which mammography and 3D automated breast ultrasound imaging systems were used.

Data suggests there was a "statistically significant relative improvement" when radiologists used both imaging systems as opposed to mammogram-only results.
