Medical imaging modalities help train master welders, manufacturers
A technical school in South Dakota is drawing from its radiologic technologist program to train future welders how to excel at their craft.
The school is Mitchell Technical Institute, where the head of welding and manufacturing technology tells the Daily Republic of Mitchell how x-rays can precisely show weaknesses in weldments—a critical training point.
“Nobody can just put a weld down and send it down the road,” says the instructor, Travis Peterson. “There’s people getting killed out there because of weld failures.”
Meanwhile Peterson’s department has purchased an ultrasound machine for much the same purpose.
Peterson tells the newspaper that graduates of Mitchell Tech’s advanced welding program stand to earn a starting salary topping six figures.
