Legal ramifications to consider when integrating AI into daily radiology practice

The long legal saga of Richard Paulus, a Kentucky cardiologist accused of performing unnecessary cardiac procedures, appears to still be going strong in 2022 and might be reviewed by the Supreme Court. The New York state radiologist is facing 36 misdemeanor counts for secret sexual recording without consent, according to a story in the Boston Herald.

“Formidable legal obstacles threaten AI’s impact on the specialty and, if unchanged, have the potential to preclude the future success of this emerging industry,” experts cautioned in AJR.

ACR announces new plan to 'empower radiologists of the future'

A new Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute study found that between 2017 and 2019 the number of non-physician providers (NPPs, which includes nurse practitioners and physician assistants) employed by radiology only practices increased 18%. This increase was associated with more NPPs employed per practice, as well as an 11% increase in the number of practices employing them.

“Our strategy work will guide the ACR as our healthcare system undergoes rapid changes in regulation, in payment, in types of care delivery, as well as from a host of other challenging factors,” a member of the planning committee said.

Findings potentially linked to autism spotted on routine prenatal ultrasound, research shows

A new study offers insight into the prenatal development of children who are eventually diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by using ultrasound to identify early anatomical anomalies.

Ultrasounds of fetuses who later developed ASD displayed three times more anatomical anomalies than the general population control group, according to research in Brain.
