The procedure, which occurred June 14, took doctors at La Raza Medical Center in Mexico City 10 hours to complete, according to the Associated Press. At the time of the surgery, the boy, Jesus Rodriguez, weighed less than the tumor at 26 lbs.
Gustavo Hernandez, MD, director of pediatrics at La Raza Medical Center, told the Associated Press the boy was born with the lump that eventually covered the right side of his body from armpit to hip. He also said the operation marks the first time Mexican doctors removed a tumor larger than the patient.
