Nuance debuts business intelligence tool, new reporting software version
Nuance Communications showcased its Dictaphone Healthcare division’s RadCube, a web-based business intelligence tool for advanced clinical data mining, analysis and classification as well as version 5.0 of Dictaphone’s PowerScribe speech-enabled reporting solution during the 2008 Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) meeting in Seattle.
RadCube, now a core component of Dictaphone’s end-to-end, closed-loop radiology management product portfolio, includes a set of solutions built to significantly improve diagnostic imaging workflow and support the radiology practice from start to finish, Jonathon Dreyer, marketing manager, radiology, Nuance, told Health Imaging News.
By adding business intelligence to the radiology data capture and review process, RadCube helps to tie together all of the data that is pulled from systems and applications that would otherwise remain unstructured and disparate, according to Nuance.
Dreyer said that the real-time, multifaceted approach to data structuring that RadCube offers is a result of the merging of On-Line Analytical Processing and web architecture technologies. Additionally, RadCube is powered by Leximer, a proprietary natural language processing engine.
With Leximer, RadCube uses data mining algorithms to extract, structure and classify free-form, narrative dictation found within radiology reports that can be used for quality assurance, quality control and outcomes analysis for auditing such things as patient findings, provider recommendations and follow up, as well as diagnosis type, Dreyer said.
RadCube, which is currently available worldwide, works together with the Dictaphone radiology documentation and communication software portfolio, PowerScribe, Veriphy, RadPort and RadWhere.
Additionally, the company showcased version 5.0 of PowerScribe, which includes enhancements and integration capabilities geared to support and improve the radiology workflow process, according to Robert Fleming, senior product manager.
“With the Powerscribe 5.0 release, we concentrated on improving speech recognition accuracy,” Fleming said. “We wanted to make sure what is dictated comes out accurate.”
PowerScribe 5.0, which is available as an upgrade to existing PowerScribe users, natively supports multi-vendor radiology information system (RIS) environments to streamline workflow for sites that have disparate systems and inconsistent operational processes, according to Nuance.
The new version includes updates to the overall system architecture, which result in enhanced database storage, easier deployments and maintenance, as well as support for the latest technologies, including LDAP, SSL, Windows XP x64, Windows Vista, MS SQL 2005 and RealSpeak 4.5.
PowerScribe 5.0 is integrated with Veriphy for automated communication and reporting of high-priority patient findings as well as integration for order decision support and business intelligence, enabling end-to-end workflow optimization. Fleming said that Vocada’s Veriphy workflow and functionality has been embedded within Powerscribe 5.0 to allow better communication with referring physicians.
“PowerScribe adapts into the rad environment with new workflow changes to make the dictation and transcription process more streamlined,” Fleming noted.
The new features of PowerScribe 5.0 were driven by customer feedback, industry demand as a result of regulatory and operational pressures, as well as Nuance’s own innovation to ensure the radiology market continues to embrace technology to improve the overall clinical documentation and communication process, Fleming concluded.
