NCI designates Roswell Park Cancer Institute a center of excellence

Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y., has been named a Center of Quantitative Imaging Excellence by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Conferred by NCI, the designation follows a qualification program executed by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN). Any of the country’s 59 NCI-designated cancer centers are eligible to become Centers of Quantitative Imaging Excellence, which requires initial qualification and yearly requalification assessments.

The title allows Roswell Park to participate in clinical trials using standardized imaging protocols, which ultimately aim at guiding therapy and monitoring disease to reduce variability in the performance of brain- and body-imaging procedures for early tumor detection.

“It’s very important that, as an industry and particularly within the oncology field, we share our best practices in a mutual exchange with other nationally recognized programs, and the [Center of Quantitative Imaging Excellence] program is a great platform for doing just that,” commented Zachary Grossman, MD, chair of diagnostic radiology & nuclear medicine and a professor in the department of diagnostic radiology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

In addition to the ACR and ACRIN, the Center of Quantitative Imaging Excellence program is a collaborative effort among the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, RSNA, the Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers Alliance and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.
