At University Hospital Kerry (UHK) in southwest Ireland the bad news continues after a retrospective review of more than 46,000 scans revealed 11 patients had delayed cancer diagnoses, including four deaths since the review began, according to a new report from the Irish Examiner.
The review, launched in August 2017, looked at 46,234 images made up of CTs, ultrasounds and chest x-rays read by a single radiologist consultant, no longer employed by UHK, performed between March 2016 and July 2017.
“Regrettably four of the eleven patients have passed away in the intervening time period between identifying their delay and the publication of the Lookback Report,” the executive summary of the report read.
The report went on to give a number of recommendations at the hospital, group and national level.
