Planmed lands Chinese tender for mammography
Planmed Oy has been awarded a contract from the Chinese Ministry of Health and the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association for installation of more than 100 mammography systems in order to support an extensive breast cancer screening project in China.
The Helsinki, Finland-based company, a subsidiary of Planmeca Group, said many of the systems will be equipped with stereotactic biopsy devices.
The Chinese Ministry of Health and the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association are launching the breast screening initiative. The American Cancer Society and Radiological Society of North America will also participate in the venture, Planmed Oy said.
The study will screen one million Chinese women in a period of four to six years. It is China's first attempt to use large volume screening for gathering data on the breast cancer situation in that country.
According to Planmed Oy, all of the mammography units will be equipped with CR digital imaging plates. The first systems were supplied to Beijing in February. The units will be installed in screening centers throughout 50 cities. Thirty additional units will be installed in buses which will accommodate women living outside urban areas. Diagnostic image viewing will be conducted at Beijing Expert Consulting Center/Central Model Clinic, which will also serve as the administrative and educational center for the project.
