ARRT proposes changes to education requirements
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) has proposed changes to two of its governing documents that would extend the time allowed for earning a baccalaureate degree and postpone a reinstatement procedure requiring re-examination or re-qualification in each discipline an individual wants to reinstate.
Last spring, the ARRT said it would extend by four years the Dec. 31, 2007 deadline for radiology practitioner assistants (RPAs) to earn the baccalaureate degree necessary to apply for and take the Registered Radiologist Assistant (RRA) examination under the temporary eligibility pathway, initially announced in fall 2005. The extension will be codified in proposed changes to the Rules and Regulations, Section 2.03(o).
RPAs will have through Dec. 31, 2011, to earn RRA certification from ARRT. The RPA-pathway alternatives to the standard educational and clinical portfolio requirements, however, must have been completed by Dec. 31, 2007.
ARRT has also proposed the postponement of the implementation of a reinstatement procedure that would require re-examination or re-qualification in each discipline the individual wants to reinstate.
The requirement, which was initially announced in the 2007 Annual Report to Registered Technologists and scheduled for implementation on Jan. 1, will now apply to reinstatement by re-examination and by re-qualification beginning Jan. 1, 2009. Thereafter, individuals who seek reinstatement of registration by re-examination or re-qualification must successfully complete the process in each discipline being reinstated.
The requirements for reinstatement in each discipline will apply to individuals who have not reported compliance with the CE requirements for three years or longer. Those who last reported compliance less than three years ago are not yet subject to re-examination or re-qualification requirements, according to the ARRT.
Prior to the Jan. 1, 2009 change, the association said that individuals seeking reinstatement by re-examination or re-qualification have only to re-examine in one of the primary disciplines in which they were certified in order to be reinstated in all disciplines. This option will remain open through Dec. 31.
ARRT invites public comment until May 30. The Board of Trustees will consider all comments prior to enacting changes; any adopted changes will be effective Aug. 1, the association said.
