DR Systems adds orthopedic template software to PACS

DR Systems, Inc. introduced an orthopedic template software option for PACS and announced the release of version 7 of its software. The company's role in helping rural hospital access imaging services was highlighted in a SCAR presentation.
     
TraumaCad will be available as an orthopedic template software option with DR Systems PACS. TraumaCad provides surgeons with digital images, tools and templates to plan a full range of orthopedic procedures, providing an easier and more accurate alternative to traditional planning using hard copy film and overlays. The integrated DR Systems-TraumaCad solution displays images from a full range of modalities and enables preoperative plans to be archived with patient files and viewed in the operating room. DR Systems Chief Operating Officer Kent Curtis states, "The TraumaCad software supports easy updates of orthopedic templates and has robust DICOM protocol." TraumaCad features a complete library of implants and fixation element templates to streamline comparison of templates to digital patient images to enable selection of the best surgical option. The software allows surgeons to enter the operating room with the specific tools, instruments and implants needed, which shortens procedure time.
   
"The release of version 7 provides enhanced RIS/PACS integration and offers cardiology and orthopedic templating tools. The key differentiator is web-based dictation and transcription to allow radiologists to read and dictate from home," sums Curtis.
   
William O'Leary, RT, PACS specialist/outreach coordinator at Kalispell Regional Medical Center (KRMC) described how extended sophisticated radiology services to rural community hospital via the remote access capabilities of its DR Systems PACS. Previously, availability of such services was limited to regional medical centers. The PACS allows eight geographically dispersed hospitals and a healthcare clinic to receive in-progress images in less than one hour, initial voice clip report summaries in two hours and completed reports in six to ten hours. Prior to PACS, the facilities received radiology and diagnostic imaging services once weekly, at best. DR Systems offers remote access, enabling the sites to extend services with minimal additional investment. Access was provided though a T1 line using existing infrastructure, and the PACS accommodated legacy scanners at the outlying facilities.
