Draeger Medical Systems to employ Aspect Medical Systems' BIS technology

Aspect Medical Systems Inc. has entered into a multi-year, worldwide development and licensing agreement with Draeger Medical Systems Inc. to incorporate Aspect's bispectral index (BIS) technology into Draeger Medical multi-parameter patient monitoring systems.

Bispectral index technology is designed to measure the effects of anesthetics and sedatives on the brain, enabling clinicians to customize the type and amount of medication they administer to meet their patient's individual needs. Using a sensor placed on a patient's forehead, BIS monitoring translates information from the electroencephalogram (EEG) into a single number that represents each patient's level of consciousness.

The companies expect that the BIS-equipped systems will be available commercially by the end of this year.

Draeger Medical Systems is the patient monitoring subsidiary of Draeger Medical AG & Co. KGaA in Luebeck, Germany.
