NetApp acquires storage security provider Decru

Network Appliance Inc. (NetApp) has announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Decru, a privately held storage security provider based in Redwood City, Calif. The acquisition is valued at approximately $272 million in cash and stock

The two companies began their partnership with a focus on assisting companies and various government organizations to safeguard their data and comply with numerous regulatory requirements. Each product combines Decru DataFort appliances with NetApp storage. However, the Decru DataFort can be deployed with a wide variety of vendors' storage systems in NAS, DAS, SAN, iSCSI, and even tape backup.

Decru provides encryption at wire speeds and also protects 'data at rest' behind the firewall, which is where recent FBI studies show up to 80% of all data attacks occur, Decru said.

For NetApp, the acquisition of Decru augments the company's lineup of data protection products including the NearStore systems for disk backup and recovery; various SnapSuite software offerings for data replication, mirroring, and restoration; NetCache systems and associated software for protection from Internet viruses and attacks; and LockVault, which helps provide the technology foundation for safeguarding regulated data, NetApp said.

The acquisition is expected to close by October 2005.
