Nucletron unveils new technologies
Nucletron B.V. of the Netherlands exhibited its newest products for cancer treatment at the 46th annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) this week in Atlanta.
Nucletron released a new inverse planning module for its SPOT PRO treatment planning system for permanent seed implants. When combined with 3D ultrasound imaging, live needle guidance and automated seed delivery, the new module enables fast plan adjustments and dynamic planning, saving operating room time.
The company also released OncoSystem Breast, a kit for accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI). According to Nucletron, OncoSystem Breast is a compilation of Nucletron products and services including Plato insight treatment planning software, Kuske Breast template, OncoSmart Catheter, and professional clinical education.
The American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Editorial Panel also has approved a CPT code for the implantation of Nucletron's Comfort Catheter System for patients who are candidates for breast conserving cancer treatment. Nucletron debuted the Comfort Catheter system, which is marketed under the OncoSmart brand, at the show.
Experiencing less discomfort during treatment, the Comfort Catheter design enables patients to be treated on an outpatient basis, permits them to wear normal clothing and allows them to quickly resume daily activities. Treatment with the Comfort Catheter System reduces the patient's treatment time from six weeks to five days.
Nucletron further confirmed at the show that has expanded its ongoing partnership with Exxim Computing Corp. The pair will now develop and market Cone Beam CT reconstruction software. Oncentra Cone Beam, the result of the partnership, will combine Exxim's reconstruction tools and Nucletron's Simulix simulator. The system is for pre- and post-treatment planning verification.
Nucletron also highlighted its new IMRT planning system called Oncentra Optimizer. The company first unveiled the system at the annual meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, July 25 - 29, in Pittsburgh. The Oncentra Optimizer is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2005.
