Sudanese clinic selects Siemens' handheld ultrasound

The Martha Primary Healthcare Centre, which currently sees about 900 antenatal patients each month in Yei, Sudan, has selected Siemens Healthcare’s Acuson P10 handheld ultrasound system selected to perform obstetric scanning in its newly renovated healthcare facility.

Representatives from the Winchester, England-based charity, the Brickworks, which is running several health initiatives in the southern region of Sudan, selected the system, Siemens said. Southern Sudan has a population of approximately 10 million people and only 10 medically certified midwives, leading to one of the highest global maternal mortality rates.

The P10 will help local staff at the clinic identify problems during pregnancy as soon as possible along with any other obstetric problems.  According to the company, the ultrasound system allows clinicians to evaluate fetal presentation, heartbeat, fluid levels and placenta location. In the future, it may also be used for other procedures.
