McKesson improves patient safety with bar-code medication administration system

McKesson Corp. has released the latest in its bar-coded medication and IV administration technology called Horizon Admin-Rx.

McKesson says the patient safety tool aids nurses in safeguarding patients beyond the "five rights" of medication administration - right patient, right drug, right dose, right time and right route - through ongoing monitoring of medication therapy and laboratory results.

Horizon Admin-Rx incorporates software, robotics and bar-code scanning as well as consulting and services expertise. Nurses can choose the workflow and device - either a wireless handheld with an integrated bar code scanner, tablet PC or mobile laptop - that is most appropriate for their case setting and medication administration process. The system simultaneously captures documentation and charging.

Horizon Admin-Rx also updates the patient's electronic medication administration record, helping healthcare providers monitor the therapeutic effectiveness of a particular drug treatment.
