An anthology of recent Alzheimer's studies
Following World Alzheimer's Day, a list of recent Alzheimer's studies, including brain PET research, was recently published by Examiner.com.
The report includes research from the University of Kentucky's Sanders-Brown Center on Aging in Lexington that implicates memory lapses in healthy older adults as a major risk factor for Alzheimer’s. This hallmark symptom in the healthy elderly is associated with three times the risk of developing the disease.
In another study involving 3,857 cognitively healthy people aged 65 years and older, long sleep duration of nine or more hours was linked to a 58 percent increase in dementia related mortality. Other research from Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, associated a single dose of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors with significant changes in the brain.
More recent is proving the concept of compensatory networks in people with Alzheimer’s disease and another study connects blood type AB with a higher risk of cognitive impairment.
