Banner Health secures $16.3M to launch imaging center

The Banner Alzheimer’s Institute plans to build an imaging center for the  research and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as heart disease and cancer, with $16.3 million in federal grants and donations.

The National Institutes of Health issued $9.2 million in grants and private donors pledged $7.1 million in gifts that will be used for center, which is located at the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Phoenix.

The 18,000-square-foot center will be equipped with a cyclotron and radiochemistry lab. Other infrastructure will include PET, CT and MRI systems. The cyclotron and radiochemistry lab will be integral for Banner as it pursues ongoing research projects, according to Eric Reiman, the institute’s executive director.

Reiman expects members of the Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium will participate in ongoing studies of Alzheimer’s that use the imaging center. Consortium members include Arizona State University, the Banner Alzheimer’s Instutute, Banner Sun Health Research Institute, Barrow Neurological Institute, Mayo Clinic in Arizona, the Translational Genomics Research Institute and the University of Arizona.
