Pentagon provides $20M boon for TBI biomarkers
Abbott Laboratories based in Abbott Park, Ill., is receiving more than $19.5 million for the development of diagnostic biomarkers and assays for traumatic brain injury (TBI), the U.S. Department of Defense announced Aug. 13.
The contract covers research for a test that can identify mild TBI. Such a test would be based on assays compatible with a device already in use in the military health system. According to the contract, Abbott was the only bid for the job.
The research is set to be carried out in Princeton, N.J., Ottawa, Canada, and Chicago, and is expected to continue until August 2016. A total of $3,892,851 in funds have already been released for fiscal 2014 research and development.
