Positron, Idaho State University to produce Mo-99
Positron Systems has entered into a partnership with Idaho State University (ISU) for the production and distribution of molybdenum-99 (Mo-99).
The U.S. supply of Mo-99 is in jeopardy due to its reliance on a foreign supplier as welll as safety concerns arising from the nuclear reactor-based production method employed by all current suppliers, according to Positron.
Scientists at ISU's Idaho Accelerator Center have developed a proprietary method to produce Mo-99 and are currently engaged in additional Mo-99 research. Worldwide production and sale of Mo-99 is estimated to be a multi-billion a year industry.
Positron Systems has facilities in Boise and Pocatello, Idaho. ISU recently received nearly $1 million in federal appropriation to further their Mo-99 research efforts.
