SNM: Mathis receives Aebersold award for imaging Alzheimers disease

Chester A. Mathis, PhD, director of the PET facility in the department of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh, has received this year’s Paul C. Aebersold award, granted by SNM for his work with early detection in Alzheimer’s disease during its annual meeting in Salt Lake City.

Mathis and William E. Klunk, MD, PhD, professor of psychiatry and neurology at the University of Pittsburgh worked together to devise a PET radiotracer, Pittsburgh Compound-B capable of imaging beta-amyloid—a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

The Paul C. Aebersold award recognizes outstanding achievement in basic science applied to nuclear medicine and is named after Paul C. Aebersold—a researcher in biologic and medical applications of radioactive materials and the first director of the Atomic Energy Commission’s Division of Isotope Development.
