Neuroimaging

Neuroradiology is a branch of medical imaging focused on spotting abnormalities of the central and peripheral nervous system, spine, head and neck. These highly trained doctors use CT, MRI, X-ray and other techniques to diagnose strokes, tumors, aneurysms and other neurological conditions.

MRI brain atlas could point way toward early Alzheimer’s diagnosis

A digital map of aging brains has been created at the University of Edinburgh and could soon help provide a roadmap in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

Imaging for Alzheimer’s: White matter degeneration a biomarker on DTI

Physicians and researchers are still unsure how or where Alzheimer disease begins in the brain, but a new study has found that white matter degeneration—detectable using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)—could be a reliable biomarker for atypical variations of the brain disease. The results of the study were published online May 27 in the journal Radiology.

Retired NFL players with concussion history at high risk of brain atrophy

Playing professional football in the NFL has always posed physical risks to the willing athletes lucky enough to find a spot on a roster. With more attention than ever now focused on examining and predicting those risks, researchers—and the players themselves—are discovering more information about just how dangerous the sport can be.

Portable ‘Battlefield MRI’ scanners could bring imaging to war zones, developing countries

The use of MRI has proven to be an invaluable diagnostic tool for assessing injuries in emergency situations—so long as those injured can make it to a hospital, that is. The Battlefield MRI project at Los Alamos Laboratories in New Mexico is aiming to change that.

fMRI reveals women suffer more memory impairment following concussion

Women with concussions, or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), may have more impairment in working memory processes than men with MTBI, according to a study published online April 28 in Radiology.

MRI scans visualize security warning fatigue

The many security prompts seen on your home computer have likely become little more than speed bumps to be quickly dismissed as you go about your day. Despite some scary sounding language, repeated exposure can cause the brain to essentially stop caring, and a new study is imaging that process.

Imaging study shows prenatal exposure to air pollution disrupts brain development

Prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, neurotoxic air pollutants resulting from car emissions and industrial coal burning, hinders brain development and could lead to learning disabilities and behavioral issues, according to results of a study published online Mar. 25 in JAMA Psychiatry.

British brain imaging study to focus on LSD

Scientists at Imperial College London are trying to complete a brain imaging study to demystify the effects of the psychedelic drug LSD, and they are turning to crowdfunding to support the project.

Positron, a New York-based nuclear imaging company, will now provide Upbeat Cardiology Solutions with advanced PET/CT systems and services.

The nuclear imaging isotope shortage of molybdenum-99 may be over now that the sidelined reactor is restarting. ASNC's president says PET and new SPECT technologies helped cardiac imaging labs better weather the storm.

CMS has more than doubled the CCTA payment rate from $175 to $357.13. The move, expected to have a significant impact on the utilization of cardiac CT, received immediate praise from imaging specialists.
