These findings show that opportunistic imaging could go a long way toward making more patients aware of the cardiovascular risks they face—all without requiring additional scans to be performed. 

Researchers suggest the variables identified in their study should be considered when deciding whether to send patients for additional assessments to confirm or rule out malignancy.

Jessica Porembka, MD, of the breast imaging division at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, said an ultrasound-first strategy for these lesions in DBT is cost-effective and improves efficiency. 

The less invasive method could help men avoid some of the unpleasant side effects such as urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction, which are known deterrents for patients facing potential prostatectomy.

The findings are concerning, especially considering the amount of orthopedic cases residents are involved in during call shifts, researchers caution.
