AI-based 3D CTA reconstruction solution scores FDA clearance
One of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s latest imaging clearances could significantly improve workflows related to computed tomography angiography exams of the head and neck.
On Monday, RapidAI announced the clearance of Lumina 3D—a state-of-the-art automated 3D imaging solution that could drastically reduce the time it takes to complete vascular reconstructions. These recons are critical for the diagnosis and management of vascular conditions, but they can sometimes take hours to complete manually.
Lumina 3D addresses the issue of time-consuming manual reconstructions by utilizing deep learning techniques to produce carotid and vertebral curved planar reformats, 3D maximum intensity projections and 3D volume renderings. Using the tool, recons are completed in a matter of minutes, not hours.
“Obtaining high-quality 3D images within minutes of a CTA scan marks a significant advancement and milestone in neuroradiology,” Vivek Yedavalli, MD, chief of neuroradiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, said in an announcement on the clearance. “When radiologists require a detailed view of the vasculature for an accurate diagnosis, challenges related to quality, availability, time, and cost present major obstacles. As head and neck CTA volumes increase, we continue to face a shortage of CT technicians and neuroradiologists. Lumina 3D addresses these issues by providing near real-time, crystal-clear 3D views, vessel segmentation, and bone removal.”
Daniel Gibson, MD, a neuro-interventionalist with Goodman Campbell Brain & Spine at Ascension Health in Indianapolis, says this clearance represents a “significant advancement in neurointerventional surgery.”
“Previously, navigating challenging anatomy required a process of trial and error. Lumina 3D changes the paradigm by removing the guesswork with near-instantaneous visualization of complex anatomy,” Gibson stated. “We are entering an era of precise procedural planning where initial device selection is optimized for individual patient anatomy. Joining the best-in-class RAPID suite of products, this is a technology that delivers not just better imaging, but potentially better outcomes.”
RapidAI indicates this new reconstruction solution can be easily integrated into existing workflows and will enable seamless access to exams across an entire enterprise system. The recons also will be accessible for certain providers via mobile app.
