Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a crucial component of healthcare to help augment physicians and make them more efficient. In medical imaging, it is helping radiologists more efficiently manage PACS worklists, enable structured reporting, auto detect injuries and diseases, and to pull in relevant prior exams and patient data. In cardiology, AI is helping automate tasks and measurements on imaging and in reporting systems, guides novice echo users to improve imaging and accuracy, and can risk stratify patients. AI includes deep learning algorithms, machine learning, computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, and convolutional neural networks.

Drumbeats & deaf ears

The review “The Time Has Arrived for National Reimbursement of Screening CT Colonography,” published in the July issue of American Journal of Roentgenology sounds like an all-too-familiar story. Will the latest evidence persuade the powers that be to push forward with coverage of a vital screening exam? Or will we remain in limbo?

Barco introduces 3MP diagnostic displays with LED backlights, allowing radiologists to see more detail

Healthcare imaging specialist Barco announces the launch of two new diagnostic display systems: the premium grayscale Coronis 3MP LED and the high-bright Nio Color 3MP LED. Featuring 3MP resolution and using high-bright LED backlights, these diagnostic displays enhance radiologist productivity and performance by making subtle details more noticeable more quickly.

Review calls for coverage of screening CT colonography

Five years ago, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) determined there was insufficient evidence to support national reimbursement of screening colonography. Multiple studies published in the interim address the USPSTF’s concerns and support a change in rating, according to a review published in the July issue of American Journal of Roentgenology.

Volumetric growth may provide CT colonography biomarker

Volumetric growth may help determine the clinical significance of small polyps detected at CT colonography, according to a study published in the July issue of The Lancet.

Patient portal myth-busting

Will patient access to a portal improve satisfaction? Will older patients use the portal? How about portal security? These are all questions faced by providers as patient portals gather steam. In an effort to bust some myths related to the use of portals, Rochester, N.Y.-based Carestream commissioned a market consultancy firm to survey patients about portal usage. Some of the findings can be seen in this infographic provided by Carestream:

Residents reading journals on iPad, not radiology exams

Although the iPad has made a splash in radiology education, the impact of the leading tablet on daily clinical duties has been limited, according to a study published online June 26 in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

MedCurrent Announces Agreement with National Decision Support Company

MedCurrent Corporation, a provider of clinical decision support solutions (CDS), announced that it has signed an agreement with the National Decision Support Company (NDSC).

Agfa HealthCare launches NX MUSICA2 Platinum and NX MUSICA2 Neonatal for Direct Radiography in North America, highlighting neonatal applications

Agfa HealthCare announces the North American launch of its NX MUSICA2 Platinum and NX MUSICA2 Neonatal, which take image processing to a new level by rendering excellent bone and soft tissue detail simultaneously in a single exposure. These Agfa HealthCare-exclusive offerings provide enhanced detail across the entire dynamic range of the image for improved contrast, sharpness and density preferred by radiology specialists.
