Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a crucial component of healthcare to help augment physicians and make them more efficient. In medical imaging, it is helping radiologists more efficiently manage PACS worklists, enable structured reporting, auto detect injuries and diseases, and to pull in relevant prior exams and patient data. In cardiology, AI is helping automate tasks and measurements on imaging and in reporting systems, guides novice echo users to improve imaging and accuracy, and can risk stratify patients. AI includes deep learning algorithms, machine learning, computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, and convolutional neural networks.

Joint Commission issues health IT recommendations for hospitals of the future

The Joint Commission has released a report offering guiding principles and actions for the hospital of the future to meet the challenges of older and sicker patients, patient safety and quality of care, economics and the work force.

New imaging techniques could detect subtle brain injuries

Researchers have shown that three new imaging techniques can detect mild brain damage not visible using traditional methods, which could help scientists better define the type of damage that can lead to long-lasting memory and emotional problems, as well as help identify those who are most vulnerable to further trauma, according to research presented this week at the Society for Neurosciences conference in Washington, D.C.

New imaging analysis reveals brain abnormalities that may play role in ADHD

A new analysis tool, large deformation diffeomorphic mapping (LDDMM), has revealed shape differences in the brains of children with ADHD, which could help pinpoint the specific neural circuits involved in the disorder, according to a study published Nov. 17 in the online advance edition of the American Journal of Psychiatry.
