Elekta lands MGH order

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center in Boston has purchased four radiation therapy treatment systems from Elekta.

The purchase order for three Elekta Infinity and one Elekta Synergy S systems includes information management software, which will enable MGH to take advantage of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), a technique that allows clinicians to deliver tightly focused radiation treatments in less time, according to the Stockholm, Sweden-based developer. The Infinity systems also support all forms of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), Elekta said.

MGH also purchased the Elekta Synergy S, a digital linear accelerator with integrated imaging capabilities. The facility will use the Elekta Synergy S to perform stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT), as well as hypofractionated treatments utilizing IGRT and VMAT, according to Elekta.

The four treatment machines also feature the HexaPOD evo RT system, a vision-guided patient positioning platform with six degrees of freedom, which allows the system to detect and correct misalignments in patient positioning, Elekta said.
