Image Wisely campaign launched to address rad exposure in adults
The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) have joined forces with the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) to launch a task force and create the Image Wisely campaign to raise awareness about limiting radiation exposure in adults.
Image Wisely will address CT, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology, including fluoroscopy. Information will be tailored for radiology professionals, referring physicians and patients.
According to an editorial written in the December edition of Radiology, the task force’s mission is to raise awareness of opportunities to eliminate unnecessary imaging exams and to lower the amount of radiation used in necessary imaging exams to the amount needed to acquire appropriate medical images.
Specifically, the group was charged with making recommendations for a campaign to develop educational resources for radiologists, medical physicists and technologists who provide medical imaging care within the U.S., as well as referring physicians, patients and the public. Moreover, the group was charged to broadcast the availability of these educational resources by using a wide variety of electronic and print media.
Image Wisely will serve as the adult counterpart to the Image Gently campaign to limit radiation exposure in children. Image Gently was launched in 2008 by the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, a coalition of more than 40 organizations.
