U.K. hospital uses RapidArc on tongue cancer patient

Ipswich Hospital in Ipswich, England, has carried out an image-guided intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) procedure using Varian Medical Systems' RapidArc on a patient with tongue cancer.

The provider carried out the treatment on a 66-year-old male tongue cancer patient. According to Varian, before the deployment of RapidArc, the patient would have received treatment through a nine-field IMRT procedure that would have been longer than the radiotherapy treatment.

RapidArc delivers a volumetric intensity-modulated radiation therapy treatment in a single or multiple arcs of the treatment machine around the patient, said the Palo Alto, Calif.-headquartered company.
