The new analysis included 43,000 eligible U.S. veterans, 32% of whom were observed to have declined annual CT screening for lung cancer.

Although there are no current government regulations pertaining to the amount of CT scans individuals can have in a year, new survey data suggest many practicing clinicians support the notion. 

Implementing an EHR cancer tracking system to review radiology reports for abnormal findings resulted in patients at one Veterans Affairs Hospital receiving their cancer diagnosis and treatment months earlier than those who were imaged before the system was put into place.

Of 139,000 individuals enrolled in an online patient portal, just 27% viewed their radiology reports. 

The findings are the result of an analysis of more than 13,000 imaging reports containing additional follow-up recommendations.

One out of every seven radiologist follow-up recommendations contained in imaging reports is not carried out, experts recently reported in JAMA Network Open.

“For patients with a prior ICM-induced hypersensitivity reaction, healthcare providers must balance the benefit of ICM reuse against the risk of a repeat reaction,” authors of a new meta-analysis published in Radiology said.
