JAMA: Avandia is less safe than Actos in older patients, FDA study finds

Among patients aged 65 years and older, rosiglitazone (Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline) is associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart failure and all-cause mortality when compared with pioglitazone (Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals), based on a study published online July 28 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, in advance of an upcoming FDA meeting that will review the safety of rosiglitazone.

AR: High-res CT datasets may help quantify lung cancer risk

A new lung cancer risk index could provide a way to determine an individuals risk for lung cancer, according to a study published in the July issue of Academic Radiology. Researchers analyzed high-resolution CT datasets and pulmonary function testing results to produce a quantitative measure for estimating an individuals lung cancer risk.

Scripps to build $185M proton therapy center

Scripps Health plans to build a new patient care facility to offer advanced proton therapy to cancer patients in San Diego. Groundbreaking for the $185 million Scripps Proton Therapy Center is scheduled for July, and the facility is expected to be open for patient care by spring 2013.
