Ultrasound

Ultrasound, also referred to as sonography or diagnostic ultrasound, uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize soft tissue. Ultrasounds are frequently ordered to measure fetal anatomy during pregnancy, check for blood clots and to guide needle biopsy procedures of the breast, abdomen and pelvis. The imaging modality does not use any radiation to create images. Find news specific to cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography).

The green lines are the scattered photon trajectories calculated by Monte Carlo simulation in the study.

Radiation exposure in the cath lab: Tracking the impact on interventional echocardiographers

Researchers found that echocardiographers in the cath lab are exposed to high doses of radiation on the right half of their body, especially the waist and lower body.

New ASE guideline outlines training standards for interventional echocardiography

The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) released a new guideline document that outlines uniform training standards for interventional sonographers guiding structural heart procedures.

Shear wave elastography assessment improves TI-RADS scoring

That’s according to an award-winning scientific online poster presented this week during the American Roentgen Ray Society’s annual meeting being held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

dual modality super resolution ultrasound imaging

New dual modality ultrasound technique offers greater 'accessibility, portability and cost effectiveness'

The hope is that the technique could lead to earlier detection of diseases by simultaneously identifying structural and functional abnormalities that standard ultrasound imaging methods alone cannot.

Is scanning the axilla during diagnostic breast ultrasound necessary?

Experts recently questioned the necessity of scanning the axilla region during diagnostic breast ultrasound, as new data indicate that it is minimally beneficial for cancer detection.

Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) allows for reproducible breast imaging without variation based on which sonographer performs the exam. It also can help centers were they are short on qualified breast sonographers.  Breast ultrasound can help identify cancers, or benign cysts, even in women with very dense breast tissue. Automated ultrasound excels for women with dense breasts

Could automated breast ultrasound replace handheld ultrasound?

Echocardiography expert Patricia A. Pellikka, MD, discussed the trend of increasing artificial intelligence (AI) integration in cardiac ultrasound with Cardiovascular Business at American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2023 meeting.

AI's growing impact on echocardiography

Cardiology has the second largest number of FDA-cleared AI algorithms, and many of them are for cardiac ultrasound. Echocardiography expert Patricia A. Pellikka, MD, discusses this trend and how AI is helping improve echo.

Women in India are sometimes denied vital imaging due to their marital status

An independent news media company based in India recently detailed the stories of 12 different women who, despite their documented clinical need, were unable to obtain a transvaginal ultrasound because they were unmarried at the time.

CMS has more than doubled the CCTA payment rate from $175 to $357.13. The move, expected to have a significant impact on the utilization of cardiac CT, received immediate praise from imaging specialists.

The newly cleared offering, AutoChamber, was designed with opportunistic screening in mind. It can evaluate many different kinds of CT images, including those originally gathered to screen patients for lung cancer.
