X-ray

Medical X-rays have mostly converted from film, to computed radiography (CR) that used individual plates to record each X-ray digitally that then had to be uploaded into a PACS, to what is the standard-of-care today with digital radiography (DR). DR X-ray which allows immediate digital transfer of images into a PACS for immediate review. X-rays are used to diagnose fractures, bone abnormalities, lung pathologies and tumors, as well as monitor pediatric growth, plan for surgery and treat oncology patients during radiation therapy. More detailed anatomical imaging, especially soft tissue imaging, is usually sent for advanced imaging with CT or MRI. X-ray, especially mobile DR systems, are a primary use case for artificial intelligence (AI) integration.

COVID ventilation complications

Life-threatening barotrauma common in intubated COVID patients, trackable by chest X-rays

Radiologists involved in the care of these patients should be especially vigilant in identifying the signs of complications, experts cautioned in a new Clinical Imaging research paper.

AI software approved for use on adult chest X-rays shows promise for pediatric population

In a sampling of 2,273 chest radiographs of kids aged 2 to 18-years-old the AI-based software achieved diagnostic accuracies ranging from 86% to 96.9% for detecting a myriad of pathologies.

Many clinicians flouting X-ray-first guidelines for ankle imaging

Established clinical guidelines hold that patients presenting with ankle issues should not receive advanced imaging ahead of standard radiography. New research shows a substantial proportion of ordering clinicians sending these patients straight to MRI anyway.

Chest X-ray. Using an explainable artificial intelligence (AI) model, researchers were recently able to accomplish highly accurate labeling on large datasets of publicly available chest radiograph X-rays..

Explainable AI model accurately auto-labels chest X-rays from open access datasets

A model that can achieve accuracy in line with that of radiologists when labeling open-access datasets could be a key factor to overcoming limitations of artificial intelligence implementation, researchers explained in Nature Communications.

Automated AI-generated measurements combined with annotated CT images can improve treatment planning and help referring physicians and patients better understand their disease, explained Sarah Jane Rinehart, MD, director of cardiac imaging with Charleston Area Medical Center.

Two advanced algorithms—one for CAC scores and another for segmenting cardiac chamber volumes—outperformed radiologists when assessing low-dose chest CT scans.

"Gen AI can help tackle repetitive tasks and provide insights into massive datasets, saving valuable time," Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said Tuesday.
